A [project](https://docs.tulipfarm.ai/concepts/chats-and-projects/) is a shared space for the chats, files, and instructions of a team. Only project members can open a project.

## Project roles

| Role | What the person can do |
| --- | --- |
| **Member** | Read and reply in every project chat. |
| **Manager** | Do what a member does. Also change the files, instructions, and members of the project. |

## Create a project

1. Select **Projects** in the sidebar.

2. Select **New project**.

3. Enter a **Project name**, for example "Spring launch".

4. Select **Create project**.

You become the manager of the new project.

## Add instructions

Project instructions apply to every new message in the project.

1. Open the project.

2. Select **Add instructions**.

3. Type the instructions, for example "Answer as the launch team. Use the launch brief for dates."

4. Select **Save changes**.

## Add files

Every chat in the project reads the project files. All project members can see these files.

1. Open the project.

2. Under **Files**, select **Add**.

3. Select **Upload files** and choose files from your device.

To add notes instead, select **Paste text**. Enter a **Title** and the **Text**, then select **Save text**.

Rules for project files:

- The total size of all project files is up to 20 MB.
- Accepted files are text, code, Markdown, JSON, YAML, HTML, PDF, and DOCX files.
- Pinned files come first. To pin a file, select **Pin to top**.

## Add members

1. Open the project.

2. Next to **Members**, select **Manage**.

3. Select **Add a member**.

4. Choose a **Person**.

5. Choose a **Role**.

6. Select **Add member**.

You can add only people who are already in the workspace. To add someone new, [invite them to the workspace](https://docs.tulipfarm.ai/admin/members-and-invitations/) first.

## Start a project chat

1. Open the project.

2. Type your request in the message box.

3. Send the message.

A project chat shows **Shared in this project**. All project members can read it. A shared chat cannot use Google file references. To use a Google file, start a personal chat instead.

## Move a personal chat into a project

> **Caution:** You cannot move a chat back to your personal chats. Every project member can read the full history of the chat, including earlier messages.

1. Open the personal chat.

2. Open the **Chat actions** menu.

3. Select **Move to project**.

4. Choose a project.

5. Select the check box that starts with "I understand that every project member can read the full history".

6. Select **Move chat**.

## Archive a project

An archived project stays readable. Nobody can send messages in it or change its files. Only a manager can archive or restore a project.

1. Open the project.

2. Select **Edit project**.

3. Select **Archive project**.

To bring the project back, open it and select **Restore project**.
